The Power of Choice – How To Be Successful In What Matters Most

The Power of Choice - How To Be Successful In What Matters MostHow to be successful in what matters most?

This is a question I ask myself often.

The reason is because I don’t want to get to the end of my life only to look back and realize I wasted it pursuing success in areas that don’t matter. I want to live it forward in the areas that truly matter most!

That’s why these questions in a recent issue of Success Magazine caught my attention:

  • What single force can shape our success or our failure?
  • What one power do we have that, if used correctly, can practically guarantee our success?

The Bullhorn of Your Actions

(NOTE: Today is the kickoff of a new swim season for the team I coach, so I decided to repost this blog from June 2011. It’s something I wrote for the team concerning the key to success. I hope it inspires and encourages you today!)

The Bullhorn of Your Actions — The #1 Key To Success

Key to Success - The Bullhorn of Your ActionsI think the following phrase might be the #1 key to success in the most important roles of our lives…What we believe in is evidenced by how we live, not just by what we say.

Did you catch that?

What we believe in is evidenced by how we LIVE, not just by what we say.

As many of you know, I coach a summer swim team. It’s very different than the other sports I’ve coached over the years. For one, the team is larger (last year we have 155 swimmers ages 4-18 years old / this year we are closer to 180). Two, we have practice practically every weekday morning from 8-11 AM. Three, our swim meets are 6-7 hour events…warm-ups start around 5 PM and most meets finish sometime around 11 PM (give or take an hour). Finally, the behind-the-scenes work coaches have to do (i.e. the paperwork of seeding a meet), along with all the behind-the-scenes work that volunteers have to do is enormous. As I often say, the people who run a swim meet effectively could probably run any major organization or endeavor.

All and all, coaching swimming is a huge investment of time, energy, and focus. At the same time, the return on that investment is just as enormous. The opportunities to teach life lessons to swimmers (and LEARN them myself) are abundant, and I’d love to share one of the lessons I’ve taught (and learned) during the past few weeks.

That Purpose Thing!

As you know, I ask the “what is success” question a lot!

One thing I’ve come to learn about the “what is success” question is that true success is tied closely to discovering your purpose and then living out your mission.

The reason?

Discovering your purpose ignites passion for life. What’s more, living out your mission happens when your natural aptitudes intersect with your life’s passions and purpose.

We’ll be talking a lot about the intersection of passions and natural aptitudes during our Discover Your Purpose—Live Your Mission teleseminar on Thursday, March 1. I hope you’ll join us!

What Is Success – The Pursuit of Worthwhile Goals

What Is Success? The Progressive Realization of Worthwhile Goals

What is success? Earl Nightingale said, “Success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal.”

If you think about it, that is actually a great definition. The reason this definition is so good is because a person can experience true success immediately! True success isn’t just found in the worthwhile achievement or end-result itself; true success is also found in the progressive realization of that worthwhile achievement and end-result.

So what is success for you? Are you setting goals that are worth pursuing? Are your ideals worthy enough?

One important thing to remember when answering the “what is success” question for yourself is that worthy goals and ideals do NOT have to be over-the-top or extravagant. In fact, true success is often experienced most when you take small, daily steps of personal development.

So, what is success going to look like for you today? The two videos below give you a taste of what success looked like for me this past weekend. But remember, the success wasn’t just the end-result; it was the daily steps I took (and will continue to take) to get to this result. It is the progressive realization of a worthwhile goal!

Key to Success – Persistence

Key to Success – Stick It Forward

Key to Success Story: Thanks to my friend, Randell Mark, I found a perfect quote for my blog yesterday entitled “What Is Success—More Thoughts on Success.” If you didn’t have a chance to read it, I shared the success story of a friend of mine named Tim. As I wrote, often the key to success are revealed more clearly through a real-life story than through teaching points. I believe this is the case with Tim’s story. Several critical success factors jump out from his story.

Well…today I am sharing another quote on the key to success that Randell pass along to several of his friends at 48Days.Net (a great website to check out if you are interested in “creating work you love”).
