Work Hard Play Hard – Where Do You Stand?

When you hear the phrase work hard play hard, what comes to mind?

Does work hard play hard mean dragging yourself through the week slaving away at a J-O-B you hate so that during the weekend you can play hard at what you love? As the song says: “Everybody working for the weekend!”

Or does work hard play hard make more of a statement about doing work you love? As James Michener says: “The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his information and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both.”

How to Take Ownership of Your Reputation

This past week I was the keynote speaker at the Pennsylvania FCCLA Spring Leadership Conference. I challenged the 400+ student leaders in the audience to take 100 percent ownership of their reputation. I explained that owning their reputation does not require “spin,” which is the less-than-politically-correct way of saying “reputation management.” Instead, ownership requires leadership. It requires individuals to lead their lives in such a way that their reputation stays sweet instead of turning sour.

Before explaining any of this or even starting the conversation on reputation, I wanted to establish its importance in a very visible way. That’s why I pulled out a jug of lemonade and another jug of chocolate milk.
